Hastings Visits Agriculture Research Center in Wapato

Last month Congressman Hastings toured the Agriculture Research Service (ARS) center in Wapato.  He met with a lead researcher to discuss the important work being done to help Central Washington farmers remain competitive in the international marketplace.

With centers in Wapato, Wenatchee and Prosser, the ARS has a significant presence in Central Washington.  Every year, Congressman Hastings works to secure funding for agriculture priorities in Central Washington, including funding to support the ARS Centers.

Yakima County Highlights

Congressman Hastings recently had the opportunity to get a first-hand look at Jeld-Wen Windows and Doors in Yakima and meet with Mark Powers, the Vice President of the Northwest Horticultural Council.  Representatives from Sunnyside Community Hospital visited with Congressman Hastings’ staff in Washington, D.C. to discuss ways to increase access to affordable hometown health care.  At the end of this week, Congressman Hastings is scheduled to attend a groundbreaking ceremony for a new school facility in Union Gap.

Colombia Trade Deal a Priority for Local Economy

On September 9th, Congressman Hastings met with Colombian Minister of Trade Luis Guillermo Plata to discuss the economic importance of passing the U.S.-Colombia trade agreement.  Immediately upon enactment of the agreement, tariffs would disappear on many local products including apples, cherries, pears, beef, potatoes, raspberries, wheat, and dairy.

“With 1 in 3 Washington state jobs tied to trade, we depend on fair agreements for creating jobs and growing our economy.  Unfortunately, those who control Congress have rewritten the rules to indefinitely block a yes-or-no vote on the Colombia trade deal.  Eliminating unfair trade barriers to home state products is one of the best ways to create jobs and grow businesses and I’ll continue pressing congressional leaders to allow a vote on approving the Colombia trade agreement."
