Hastings Marks Nuclear Worker Day of Remembrance

October 30th has been officially designated by Congress as a National Day of Remembrance for nuclear workers.  Congressman Hastings’ District Director Barb Lisk participated in a Cold War Patriots event today in Richland to honor workers.  During the event she read the following letter from Congressman Hastings.

“Thank you for allowing me to be a part of your event today.  First and foremost, I want to express my sincere thanks to you and to all current and former Hanford workers for your service to our nation.

“As you know, today is the inaugural National Day of Remembrance – a day to honor nuclear weapons program workers.  It’s important that we, as a nation, never forget that the nuclear production work performed at Hanford and at other sites helped win World War II, defeat communism, and win the Cold War.  Here at Hanford, our nuclear history began in the 1940’s and played a pivotal role in our nation’s defense for decades.  We owe a huge debt of gratitude to these workers for their contributions to U.S. security.

“Today, Hanford is the world’s largest, most complex nuclear cleanup site – and our cleanup workers are also making a critical contribution to our community and our nation.

“Whether its supporting current cleanup work, preserving historic facilities in order to educate future generations about the work accomplished at Hanford, or ensuring that the federal government lives up to its responsibility to aid in the care of those who have been made ill as a direct result of their work in service to our nation – I am committed to serving all of our current and former workers.  If you experience a problem with any federal agency, please do not hesitate to contact me.  In many cases, I am able to be of assistance.

“Again, thank you for service.  My thoughts are with workers and their families on this first National Day of Remembrance.”
